back to work

... or is it play?  Is quilting considered playing, even if you're retired and don't have a regular 9 to 5?

I didn't feel like I was playing yesterday, when I was trying to quilt this small, tiny little quilt and it felt like I was pushing a mack truck around.

It would have been okay if I hadn't used this silicone spray that's supposed to make your surface smooth, slick, and oh-so-easy to slide your quilt across.  It's a can I bought for 94 cents from Hancock Fabrics when they were closing that one location in December; the way I figure it, they owe me 92 cents change!  And the thing is, I don't usually use anything, but I bought this spray because it was marked down from something like $7.99.  Gotta watch out for those just-because gotchas!

I don't have anything quilty I can show just yet but I will in a couple days.  But meanwhile I just finished an Audible book that I highly recommend, if you're into time travel and romance; I've been hooked ever since I discovered Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series!

Anyway, The Rose Garden by Susanna Kearsley is a good listen:
"Eva Ward is a modern woman thrown back three centuries to 1715 - only to find that might be exactly where she belongs. There, she finds true love with Daniel Butler, but the discord surrounding Hanoverian King George plunges the lovers into a world of intrigue, treason, and romance."
I like the way she handles her back-and-forth trips, not letting her modern-day friends know she was thrown back, but she has to pretend to be a mute for the 1715 people, except for the first two she met.  She had to play "dumb" because her modern speech would have caused too many awkward questions.

It has a great surprise ending; if you're an Audible fan you should put The Rose Garden on your list!

That's all for now, sew forth and sew on til later

  1. When you are retired it is your choice to call it work or play! I am waiting for that opportunity.

  3. I've had good luck with that spray. I use a light mist on my platform table and wipe with a paper towel to get it all evenly distributed. Like they say, there are more ways to skin a cat. I like the silicone sheet as well. It's good to have both handy.

I've debated on starting the Outlander series in audio. Is it easy to follow? Right now I'm watching Downton Abbey while I sew.

  4. Bummer on the spray! Now, if they had something to make hand quilting go faster.....
