The fair

Remember this children's song?
I went to the animal fair,
The birds and the beasts were there,
The big baboon by the light of the moon
Was combing his auburn hair.
You should have seen the monk,
He sat on the elephant's trunk;
The elephant sneezed and fell on his knees,
And what became of the monk,
the monk, the monk?

Yesterday a friend and I went to the Montgomery County fair and it was a great day for it! We got there around noon, trying to beat the afternoon heat if that's possible.

It's been years and years and years since I went to the fair but one thing I remember is the agricultural exhibits... do they ever change?  I was totally impressed with the super-large tomatoes, the artfully arranged veggies and this 558 pound pumpkin!

Of course there are always fun things too, like this decorated toilet and the tractor in lady-like colors...

closeup of the tractor - it's a Ford!
Inside one of the buildings we visited "the largest candy store in the world" - hah, they haven't seen Vegas!  They had candy you see every day, but it was fun scoping out ole-timey candies such as BB bats, Mary Janes, and squirrel nut zippers.  Do they still sell candy cigarettes??

The decorated cakes were impressive and I thought the goose herder was kinda cute.
Those geese were fearless!  One HONK! and people moved the heck outta their way!

There weren't too many quilts; I like scrappy and colorful, so here's one I shot:

By this time the heat was rising and my friend was sweating, so we didn't see the entire fair.  Maybe next time!

ps - does anyone know how to make your comment area have the "Reply" link?  I've searched far and wide and can't find the instruction ... maybe I haven't searched wide enough?

Have a great Monday, today I buy a new ceiling fan - sew forth and sew on!

  2. I haven't been to a fair in years! I didn't think they could sell candy cigerates anymore. I always loved the dots on a paper strip.
