It's been a long time!

Has it really been two weeks since I posted last time??  Time really flies when you're goofing off!

I was talking with my friend Sandy the other day about her colorwash designs, and she invited me over for a play date.  So Monday I grabbed my GO cutter and a few fabrics that I thought would be useful and headed over to her house.

For inspiration and instruction Sandy is using Colourwash Quilts: A Personal Approach to Design & Technique by Deirdre Amsden.  It was quick and easy using my GO to cut the strips, then we placed them back on the mat to cut the squares.  Sandy is basing her designs on 2-1/2" squares rather than the 2" size suggested in the book.

Sandy had lots and lots of squares already cut that we played around with - in her words she had "thousands and thousands!"

I remember taking a colorwash quilt class years ago at G Street Fabrics, and I remember I had a kind of design pinned to a piece of felt.  It's tucked away upstairs someplace, in about 8 or 10 dozen pieces!

One thing I forgot about making a colorwash design is, you have to put a few pieces on the wall then back off and look at it from across the room.

I had a sort of 9-patch design mapped out, but somehow the colors started to moosh together!  Do colorwash quilts have a mind of their own?

We pinned my squares together in row order, I'll have to make a large design board to work with so I don't tie up my design wall.  I have a feeling this is a project that's going to go kinda slow because I have the tendency to overthink things.

Well that's all for now, have a great Thursday, sew forth and sew on!

  3. I've never done a colorwash - with two furries, I would have trouble keeping things in order. Looks like you had a great time - always more fun to stitch with others.

    1. You need to invest in a reducing glass which appears to put your design wall several feet away while you are standing right in front of it. Some people use the hardware store peepholes but I think they miniaturize it too much. I want to still be able to see each square clearly so I can decide which ones need to be moved to a new location or removed. And yes, colorwash pieces have a mind of their own. Mine design themselves as I proceed with them.

  5. How fun! I have tons of Kaffe squares. That might be a good basis for a colorwash.

I hear ya about overthinking. I'm sooooo guilty of that!

  8. I have tried that just once for the Women's Conference banner and it turned out better than I expected. That was a great idea for a play date!
