Two quilts done

Three things to be happy about:
(1) a facial
(2) a "blooming onion" with chipotle dip
(3) a hairbrush with soft bristles

I picked up two quilts from the long-armer yesterday!  The first one - ta daaaaa! - is my version of Bonnie Hunter's Idaho Square Dance block.

My first thought was to set the ID SD blocks with sashings and cornerstones, but then I was inspired to make a modified Sisters Choice block, substituting a scrappy 4-patch with red star points for the 9-patch in the middle.

I also used 4-patch units in the corner positions; I didn't notice until after I laid the blocks side by side that all the 4-patches came together into a very nice 16 patch!

After I put the blue borders on I had second thoughts... red would have been better because of the red star points.  But it actually looks great as is!

I'd like to have offered this one to Bonnie Hunter for use during the Quiltmaker taping, but I didn't have it completed in time.

I'm calling this one "Idaho Star Dance."

This second one is a stash buster - a simple two-color block design inspired by a picture I saw in a Connecting Threads catalog.

My blocks finish at 6-1/2 x 12-1/2, set side by side and quilted without sashings or borders.

For each block I used only two fabrics, light and dark or medium and dark, as long as they had a pretty good contrast.

It went together quickly and is a great way to use up 2-1/2" strips.  Apples, kittens, flowers, bumble bees, radishes - it's all in there!

My next task is to get the bindings done - gee it feels good to finish something!

Have a great Saturday, sew forth and sew on til later...

  1. Always looking for scrapbusters. I'll give this one a try.

  2. I think a red border would have over powered the first one. The blue calms it and frames so nicely. Now that second one - that may be something to really tame my FQ tubs. I love these simple design quilts that let all the fabrics just 'speak' and no border necessary. Both are just lovely.

  4. Great job, Linda! Love your Idaho Star Dance. It was a burst of creativity to make those modified Sisters' Choice blocks and I think it's great the way both blocks play together. I'm thinking I need to pull out some strips and make a quilt like #2. Having the blocks be rectangular really takes away that "clunky" look that sometimes happens when using 2.5" strips.

  5. Love your version of ID SD -- great job! Yes, red would have looked great, but so does the blue.
